Are older direct drives worth trying?

I was poking around ebay and thought it might be fun to get a direct drive to play around with and mount one of my extra cartridges on. Saw a Pioneer PL-4 like the one I used to have and some others that looked like nice tables, ARE they nice tables though? The 4 was actually very heavy for a shorter table, not one of those black plastic cheapos that came out in the later 80's to the present. Thought it would be a little side dish to this hobby to see how good of a sound I could get out of an older(semi-cheap)table. I figure though that the good ones from back in the day that were done right are still recognized as good and you guys are going to gobble them up before I can get to 'em. Once again, this won't fit in a mailbox so how do I sneak it past the wife?
