The Melos design uses analogue optoisolators as volume controls. An analogue optoisolator works by varying the light output of an emitter which then varies the resistance of a light dependent resistor used as receiver. For a reason that has always escaped me they choose to use valves as the light source for the optoisolator. The rest of the world uses LEDs.
