Ok I'll try and keep this short, but I hooked up my Technics SLQ-303 direct drive turntable with my new ultrabudget ART Audio USB Phono Preamp and new Ortofon Concorde DJ-S - as you can guess, both the ART and the Concorde were bought at a pro audio shop, kind of on a whim. The ART I didn't even know existed - I just asked "hey do you have a phono preamp hanging around"? This thing has a USB output to send data to a computer, and I have a USB dac too. Haven't tried any of that yet, for now I just needed a phono preamp - how far wrong can I go for $120 cdn? The DJ-S I bought because it was pretty cheap, and looked a lot like my old Ortofon Concorde 30 which really sounded great on this same Technics - how far wrong can I go for $130 cdn?
So I put together the new system, put on Parliament's "Clones of Dr Funkenstien" - damn this sounds pretty good! Esp considering no breakin at all (if you believe in that). Sound almost totally detached from the speakers, extending beyond the speaker boundaries, not the ultimate in tonality though although I should listen to better material to judge that. Anyway, sounds better than it should so far. Considering my technics travelled 1,000 miles in my parent's car trunk with the platter still on, sounds way better than it should.
Having no idea how to actually set up a table, I am vaguely familiar with the concept of VTF so I set the counterweight on the table to the point where the arm floats in space, then cranked it up to 3 grams (yikes) because range of force is 3-5 grams, recommended 4 - I don't know if I want to push it's face into the groove to the tune of 4 grams though. Sounded better at 3 than it did at 2 though.
So now the question, I read by a number of posts on AA here that I can replace the stylus of this DJ thingy with a "hi fi" stylus - on amusicdirect.com right here they show the OM30 at the top of this list - will a simple stylus replacement bring me to the level of my old (15 years ago I think) Ortofon Concorde 30 which I believe in it's time was a true hifi cartridge? To believe that I'd have to believe the cartridge body is essentially the same, but the stylus can make the difference - true? It's not a big investment by any means. There's also the OM40 at slightly more - maybe better yet? It appears these are the same stylus as on non-DJ cartriges. If the sound I'm getting now was taken up another notch, it could be embarassingly good considering the ultra-budget nature.
