In my secondary system, I'm using the Denon DL-103 on a Technics SL-1200 table. It's just about broken in, and sounds very good. However, I was noticing some "hardness" and a bit of roughness especially toward the inner grooves.Normally, I'm pretty meticulous with cart setup, but this time, I used the supplied overhang jig that came with the table.
For grins, and with a bit of spare time this weekend, I dug out the old Geo Disc, and did another alignment.
HOLY COW!! What a difference! The sound of the Denon really locked in and sounds really really good. The "hardness" is gone. No more roughness toward the inner grooves. There is incredible detail now, and it sounds more life-like. Even with beat-up old goodies, like my well played Stones' "Sticky Fingers", the sound was clean clear and undistorted.
The Baerwald alignment afforded by the Geo-Disc was dramatically different from that using the Technics over-hang jig. I'm wondering if some of the problems people hear with this deck aren't related to improper setup?
