Go with the top surfaces parallel to the record. This is as close as you can get, although VDH on his site says a slight downward angle to the tonearm is ideal.
My Ortofon X3MC and X5MC mounted on Sumiko headshells are set to zero on the 1200 VTA adjustment. Still the tonearm is tilted slightly down at the cartridge. Not much, but visible. Probably 5 degrees I estimate. The sound is great to me. For some reason the X3 with Fine Line stylus sounds better to me than the X5 with FG/2 stylus. I'm surprised that they sound so different from each other.Tom
