Way back then, they weren't such a "necessity" as they are now. :-)When I get mine running once again (and, again, thanks for the connection that allowed me to get another motor), I will try the homemade stabilizer weight I have been using on my Thorens. It weighs a bit over a pound.
You could put something that weighs about the same amount onto the center of the platter and try running the turntable. If you don't hear any noise from the bearing, it should be fine. I have tried some heavier weights on my TD125MKII, and I do get a bit of bearing noise, so I have backed off to the 1 lb one I am now using.
The Sony 3000 (either the TTS or the PS) has a very strong bearing, so I doubt that there would be any problem with your using this weight.
