Sony ES Receiver question?

Getting back into this after a few years off. What I have left is an LP12 with a Grado Sonnata cart going directly into a Sony ES receiver. Question is where to start to get beeter sound. Will a phono pre help any since everything that goes into the Sony gets converted to digital? Would a better integrated amp be a good way to go? Are there any receivers out there that do a good job on two channel with digital by-pass?
