After college I started out fresh because I sold every piece of audio I had prior to going away.
So in 1983 I started out with a modest Audio Linear/Black Widow/Adcom XCoil/Advent Receiver (highly modified) set-up 20+ years ago. For the following 15 years or so, I modified and upgraded the heck out of the Audio Linear until reaching the equivalent of a VPI 19 MK IV. The BW I was happy to toss the moment I had the opportunity to get a great deal on an EPA-500 (4 wands, guage, and MC cart) and have had it ever since.
The total spend on all that was truly minimal at about $700 or so.
In those years I went through a laundry list of cartridges including some real classics such as Accuphase AC-1, AC-2, Dynavector Ruby, several Adcoms, Benz Glider, Benz H20...Preamps in those times included the Advent, Audible Illusions Mini Mite, CJ PV-10, Audible Illusions Mod 3,3A, and 3A++, and finally the Melos Reference 333 and Phono.
My hot-rodded 19 finally went bye bye only recently about 5 years ago when a local dealer offered me a TNT Jr. demo for a blow-out price.
The change from the home grown to the TNT Jr. was in many aspects minimal, but was still an improvement.I have since spent way too much money (about $1100) adding the flywheel, SDS, Tri-Pulley (now gone) to the Jr. I'm ecstatic with the sound I'm getting, but I feel that it is way too much investment for great vinyl playback.
Having an awesome reference like my current set-up, it's now an ideal time to get back to the basics and a new DIY project.
I am now back in serious DIY mode and am embarking on another turntable project that I hope will allow me to get rid of the TNT and all of its associated expensive hardware. I would much rather have the money invested in music than in a fancy overpriced platter, bearing, and motor. So I am now back to square one. This is such a fun hobby :-)
cheers,
Send an instant karma to me...
