Frequency Response specs on a preamp ( as well as amp) are deceiving...

and largely meaningless because they are usually specified at a low wattage (in the case of an amp) or low voltage (in the case of a preamp)output.

The response characteritics of any given preamp or amp are a function of the their ability to handle high output levels.
This is one of the reasons why devices with identical frequency response specifications can sound so drastically different.

For instance a preamp with a smallish power supply can sound phenomemal with great bass and smooth extended highs at very low listening levels, but when pushed a bit, it can all of a sudden lose the frequency extremes and sound closed in simply as a result of inadequate power supply.

At best, performance specs are but a minor guideline and they are not a true indicator of what any unit will sound like when inserted to any given system.

....that is, unless you subscribe to the Julian Hirsch school of "thought", where all amplifiers and preamplifiers sound the same!

cheers,

Send an instant karma to me...
