When I'm checking out a new component, I just keep spinning LPs as the mood strikes me, same as any other listening session.Great recordings; lousy recordings; doesn't matter one bit. All that matters is whether the music keeps me interested and emotionally locked-in. If it consistently passes the involvement test over a reasonable period of time, then I'll pull out a few well-recorded chestnuts to check out the component's sonic attributes.
If the thing can't play involving music, I couldn't care less how "great" it might do audiophool sound effects. I've passed on the majority of potential "upgrades" I've tried in recent years, even though a few offered some serious sonic improvement, simply because I found them less involving than my current setup.
