I am using a 1 3/4" maple butcher block with my Aries 2.When I had the JMW10 on it the bass was awesome with my Benz cartridges, but I felt it was a tad bloated.
I now have a Phantom mounted on it and the bass is real solid and tighter with no bloat.
I found out the surface the table is sitting on is very critical. I had a TT sitting on the birch butcher blok on an Ikea Bekvam and it sounded really bad. Hard, constrained and cold.
I threw the maple up there on top of the Bekvam under the TT and it really came alive.
