Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Starker.

Either the original Mercurey, the MGI, or the reissue. The RCA CD (different performance- I like it better) also has excellent sound, as does the SACD of the original Mercurey recording. The cello is great for evaluating speakers and sound systems, as it is so rich in overtones. If the response isn't flat or at least properly balanced, this recording will reveal it. I have heard very expensive systems that sounded fine on orchestral or rock music sound pretty bad on the solo cello. A common problem is a "nasal" sound on some notes. As this music explores the range of the cello, system faults tend to pop out with certain notes or chords just sounding wrong. This isn't the only recording I use (I have four other standard ones), but I consider it essential.
