Re: sumiko blue point vs budget MM

I had a Blue Point Special I liked it a lot as it was kind of quick
and edgy and made Reggae and Bluegrass etc. sound lively, but the styli went south unusually fast, I was bummed my dealer friend sold me a Dynavector 10 x 5 which is approx the same cost as the new BPS
after the 10 x 5 I'd throw rocks at the BPS, seriously.

I agree with Ray, they hyped the snot out of the BP and BPS they must have gotten a bunch of the magazine hacks blown along with dinners at Spago's and trips to Italy or something, because they were (Sumiko's) listed in every comparison of high value cartridges, got all kinds of press ? but even compared to less expensive Denon's and Ortofon's I think the BP's and BPS's are not exactly a Sterling value(that's about as nice as I can say it ;-)

Why limit yourself to one cartridge anyway ? as long as you are into the more reasonably priced stuff anyway, try a different one periodically and in time you'll develop specific preferences.

Despite their not being exotic or exclusive unobtanium for mere mortals any number of MM's can produce serious musical enchantment
but it depends on your tastes, synergy pos. or neg. with your gear etc. you can replace the Styli when the time comes instead of pitching your $$$ into the shitcan or $$$$ for a re-tip.
Some of the NOS $50 MM's like ADC XLM II's etc. can give a few $400
dollar cartridges a real run for their money.

If you type the name of just about any cartridge into the search/archive box, you'll find numerous threads and easily get a very balanced view of what they do or don't do on what type of gear
and the personalities that like or don't like them and why.
Then you're not completly blind when buying.
