In Reply to: Cartridge impedance is 47kohm, a few semi-technical questions, I need simple answers posted by Hugh Jass on August 4, 2005 at 11:19:33:
When it is the Grado Statement which has only 0.75mV output. I won't get into the fact that it is not a MM but rather a Mi but that is notthe issue.Too many designers of phonostages fix one or more inputs to be "MM" or "MC" without the ability to change what "they" feel are the right parameters, namely gain and input impedance which are basically the only ones that matter (capacitance too but it can be the same for both cartridge types).
Considering the MM input is really intended for typical MMs with outputs of 3-5mV it is no wonder you don't have enough or less than desireable amount of gain.
I would use the MC input selected for 1K input impedance. The Statement has a quite low impedance of 36ohms which mens the actual difference between 1K and 47k may not be that noticable.
Just try it you can't hurt anything.
good luck!
