Sony SRA 3 recording tube preamp (again)

I have been experimenting with a Sony SRA 3 tape recorder preamp, from the 1960's. My main phono stage is a Manley Steelhead. I got the Sony as a spare. It is all tube, tube rectification, and uses a tube equalization and has an MM input.
I have so far swapped out the Japanese industrial tubes for 1. Mullard 12AT7 for the AT7 slots. 2. Telefunken 12AU7 for the 12AB7A ( equalization tube). I have some 6AU6 tubes on the way to substitute for the stock 6AU6.
I have hooked it up with my Benz MC3 cartridge through a YS SOLO head amp, and the sound is nothing short of spectacular so far. It has a wonderful, deep and wide vintage tube sound. It doesn't have the ultimate dynamic finesse of the Steelhead, but since it onlyl cost about $100 plus the cost of better tubes, it is a giant killer for MM phono stages. There is something really nice about tube recitfication and equalization. I am anxious to hear what it sounds like with better 6AU6, as the ones in it are a little noisy. They are pentodes and add a little silky "muscle" to the sound.
For your vintage guys looking for a second MM or wanting that great traditional tube sound for your main setup, this is something to look into for very cheap. I imagine the unit can also be tweaked in a number of ways to improve performance, but it is great sounding the way it is and gives that vintage romantic glow to the setup. It also has volume controls. The MM is controlled through the Microphone volume control, so it could be connected directly to amps without a line stage.
