I'd like to know a) where you heard/read about this "urban legend" and b) what was your thought process that made you pay credence to it.And, incidentally, why would it destroy t/table bearings and not arm bearings?
You've certainly got a lot of replies and I'm afraid I simply don't have the time left in my life to trawl through them all but I don't think I have heard of a more "far out" statement in over 30 years of listening to LPs. Well, yes, I guess I have ... some of Peter Belt's theories are way out there, too!!
