Recommendation for you cheapskates. I picked up a Sony SRA 3 tape recording preamp, all tube, tube rectification, for about $100, as a spare. It has a MM cartridge input, two volume controls, one for the Aux and one that operates the microphone and the MM input and volume controlled through the monitor output. Just for kicks, I hooked up my $75 Beyer coils to the Benz MC 3 and ran it through this puppy. I also tried the YS SOLO tube headamp. Darned if I didn't get sound that challenges my Sonic Frontiers SFP-1, great traditional tube sound. It has a 6au6 and 12at7 in each gain section.
This would be quite a budget item for those who want an nice tube phono preamp for cheap. Plenty of gain, too. It can also be used direct to amp without another preamp because of the volume controls. Needs to be well grounded.
It is built very solidly, reminiscent of the Luxman tube stuff from the 60's.
