The newer Xerxes X may eventually develop the same sag problem too. The design has been somewhat changed from the original in that there's no longer a peninsula carrying the platter and arm hanging off the rest of the top deck. However the X uses a subchassis shaped like the old Xerxes peninsula to carry the platter and arm, and this subchassis is supported only on the end near the main bearing. The rest of the subchassis - a chunk of MDF almost a foot long - just hangs in the air with the arm at the end. The subchassis on the Xerxes X I reviewed for "Listener" was straight, but it was still new. I'd have felt a much greater confidence in the long term prospects of the new turntable if Roksan had used a more rigid material than MDF. Given the well -known problems with sag in the original Xerxes I don't understand why Roksan didn't fashion the X's subchassis from carbon fiber or aluminum honeycomb or almost anything else.
