Vinyl Asylum Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ. |

Tower Records had the new Radiohead CD on sale for $10. The double LP was $27. So I got the LP.Only when I played it did I find these are 45 RPM disks. Not great news for me, because when I change the belt on my turntable, it sometimes comes off- minor but unwelcome hassle.
But this was my first 45 since getting a phono stage and it is absolutely worth it.
I probably do not need to say much about this Radiohead release, it has been getting much press, and those who care know the relevant details. In short, they have retained some of their atmospheric electronics of the last 2 studio albums, but mostly gone back to guitar oriented rock a la OK Computer. This is another in a continuing series of masterful works by this great band. Not only are they successful commercially, but pretentious intellectual types rave about them, a classical pianist has arranged some of their songs for solo recital, and to my mind, they are the best of rock music in 2003.
So I would've had this yesterday on CD had I not seen the vinyl. But the CD would just not have been anywhere close. This 45 truly exhibits a sparkle in the treble and a crispness that is beyond 33 rpm. The sound is involving and compelling. For rock fans who are into vinyl, this is one to pick up.
And the bad news? I'm starting to price the Classic Records 45 releases of Mingus, Miles, the Mercurys, etc....and if you've seen the prices on these, this could be a very costly road.
