I would never place a phono cart. stylus on a flat surface, always in a groove, to avoid stress and damage to the tip, which could chip or crack, and leave the stylus an instrument of destruction instead of a playback tool. Besides the dangers, it may not ride correctly on it's tip.

Using backlighting, I have never had a problem seeing the angle, and those that have usually were able to with a magnifying glass.
