The most likely culprit is a bad stylus, IMO. I would first replace the stylus with a cheap one- there are some for $15 from reputable sellers. Replacing the stylus is an operation in itself, read the attached blogs for advice. On the upshot, it seems worth $15 to try to see if it's just a stylus and it plays after that replacement. I pulled a Sony linear TT from a dumpster for my daughter and it worked fine years.Since it seems to be tracking 'sort-of' OK, it's tempting to assume the electromechanical tracking system is adjusted correctly. It my be out-of-whack though... It is a beautifully complex thing driven by servomotors, wheels and a string (literally!) that positions the arm in the groove using signal from an optical sensor on the arm somewhere, run through a lot of circuitry. Bearings and electrical components wear out. Strings stretch. Etc. Look it up on Vinylengine- its some awesome engineering. It looks very, very hard to repair.
I don't say the above to be disparaging randomly, but if the tracking circuit is not right, the TT is probably E-waste (unless you have access to some sort of electronic genius).
