Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

The answer seems simple to me...

Assuming the gift records include a reasonable fraction if titles you'll love, say a few hundred, you could spent a grand on a vinyl rig to play back music that might otherwise cost you between 3 and 6 grand to buy new (guessing the cost of hi-res classical album download runs like $10-20). It's a no-brainer assuming you want to own actual physical media. That's a big assumption today I reckon...

If you're satisfied with a streaming service that costs around $20-30/ month and you already own decent audiophile playback equipment, then stick with that system if it gives you all the music you need and want and you don't care about owning physical media.

Playing records is a pain in the arse, if you're unused to it. Records are delicate and need to be kept very clean, cleaned before every play, and kept from scratches etc. Most high-grade vinyl playback rigs have no automation and you have to jump up at the end of a side and cue up the arm. I do it because I don't now anything different- it's the normal way I play music. I call it a hobby but it's more... its like fly-fishing- you gotta love the act. On a good evening, with my good headphones, ain't nothin' like that sweet airy natural sound.

Seems you'd be missing the boat if you don't add at least a modest vinyl rig. You can keep the big bucks in your current digital path. Many folks recommend the Project Debut Carbon and I like the looks of the Emotiva phono preamp that would allow you to experiment with different cartridges. You'd be in business for under a grand. Upgrade when you get some listening in and see if you feel it.
