RE: DIY phono stage, wire gauge question

The most important thing is to use a good soldering iron and good solder. I had two rolls of "Wonder Solder," that seemed to flow very well with my Weller soldering iron set to 700-degrees F. I bought a brand new Weller soldering iron for this kit. The solder was 30-years old but it was shiny and it flowed well and dried shiny.

To prevent components from getting too hot, I'd solder each end of a resistor at different times. In other words, I'd prepare several resistors for soldering and then I'd solder only one end of each resistor before coming back to solder the other end of each resistor. I had no problems with overheating the resistors during assembly.

You need a hot soldering iron so the solder flows instantly and then you need to give the resistor a rest to cool down before soldering the other end. You can also buy heat sinks designed for soldering small components. The heat sinks are aluminum and clip onto the wire ends of the resistor between the resistor body and the solder joint. They sink heat away from the resistor body and/or the body of any other component.

Here's a picture of one of my circuit boards showing the solder joints.

Here's another picture showing twisted wires after using my drill to twist the wires.

Good luck,
