Not sure how to do links but in page 2 on DIY analog you will see Hans Polak (optimally driving a Vpi synchronous motor). This is where it started. Various 2 phase and 3 phase designs. Guys using different class D amps etc.

Bill at pyramid got involved with a nice frequency gen design which Twisted talked about. If you go to the link he posted the other links are on the 1st post.

As much as I like DHT tubes I think the cheap class D amps get the job done for motor controllers.
