Continued the comparison between the EI 12ax7 and the Mullard 12au7. As before, very small differences if any, and perhaps in the end favoring the EI. Since the designer recommends a 12ax7 in all three tube positions, I would conclude leaving an ax7 in V3. Tried a few other ax7s in V3 including a JJ and Shuguang, and the EI is clearly the best amongst these.

From earlier tube rolling sessions, like some others I found a 5751 in V1 a significant improvement over a 12ax7. Consensus is that V2 is a primary contributor to the RIAA equalization circuit and should always be a 12ax7.

Hope that helps. There are dozens of opinions out there on tube makes and types in the 834P. Good luck sorting them out!
