Didn't think I'd be posting again about my venerable 834p but in a bored moment I started rolling some tubes through V3, the front tube closest to the on/off switch, claimed to be the cathode follower, and not usually reported to have a large effect on sq. A couple of observations so far. Comparing among different ax7 tubes I did notice fairly large differences in overall sound rather than the small differences I expected. Also, didn't know I had one but found a Mullard au7 in my stash and am listening to it now. Sounds quite similar to the best of the ax7s (an EI), with perhaps a bit more refinement, but I wouldn't take that to the bank just yet. I'm not hearing the extended bass that some report with the au7. Will report back after more extended listening if anyone's interested.
