RE: favorite Debussey

One Debussy recording I have used for many years as a reference for checking out new audio gear is Haitink's Philips recording of the Nocturnes and Jeux, which happens to be an excellent recording. "Nuages" is tremendously atmospheric, while if all is working properly "Fetes" is viscerally exciting - the part after the first climax where the orchestra gradually builds up with a steady quiet beat on the harp sends chills down my spine. Haitink made an equally good recording of the Images and the Danse Sacree et Profane.

I love Uchida's recording of the piano Etudes, though to my knowledge this was never released on LP - she really brings out the textures in this incredibly original music. Michelangeli's "Children's Corner has always been a favourite too. Debussy's late en Blanc et Noir for piano duet had to grow on me, but it is very rewarding, as are the late chamber pieces, including the Violin Sonata and Cello Sonata.

Finally, if you know the piano Preludes, try Colin Matthews' orchestrations - fascinating!

Alex
