Getz Gilberto

This is one of the first and justly famous samba records. I've listened to this and to Jazz Samba perhaps more than any lps in my collection. Somehow I never get tired of it. Although recorded in the early sixties, the sound is superlative on both. Michael Fremer rated this a 9 for both music and sound. I think both deserve an 11.

I have the Speakers Corner 33 and just listened to the 45s by Analogue Productions. They are both well done masterings and pressings but clearly I give the edge here to the 45s and not just because of the sonic advantages of 45s. I never heard an original pressing but the Speakers Corner was mastered by Kevin Gray "probably from a copy of a two track master." The AP release was cut from a two track original by George Marino. Though the tape was not in great condition with some dropouts, Marino determined it was the best copy available. And honestly, it is superb, possessing an immediacy and smoothness of the best analog recordings.

However, I did notice a conspicuous problem with the Speakers Corner disc. Almost every song has an annoyingly bloated bass. Clearly, part of this might be the recording but the mastering here was really overdone on the lower end. In fact, when I first listened to this disc, I had just gotten new speakers and thought it was the speakers. But after playing multiple records, the fault clearly was only with this particular recording. The AP disc, on the other hand, tamed the bass substantially making it much more listenable. In fact, I doubt I'll ever listen to the SC disc again.

For anyone looking for great 45 remasterings, I can say, unreservedly, these are some of the best out there. AP has done an astonishingly good job in bringing these to life again.
