I think that inside the wood case, in the Brick, there is a ferrous object. The rationale is to place them on top of EI type transformers in order to absorb EMI radiation. At least it makes some sense in the world of physics, unlike some of the other mumbo jumbo that came along later. If nothing else, the weight can help to dampen transformer vibrations.
I've got one brick that I use on the transformer of my preamplifier. Does it make a difference? Well, it makes a difference to my peace of mind.
