Last week I started hearing a pervasive crackle. It sounded very similar to the crackle from a gunky volume pot. More like the sound was breaking up. In any case, i did a lot of troubleshooting:
Swapped out my preamp for an integrated. Still bad
Tried my preamp with a different source, dvd. Sounded fine.
Switched back to my old stylus. Still bad
Cleaned the contacts on my cart. Still bad.
At this point, I would think my cart is failing or my tonearm wiring is going bad.
My cart is a 17 year old Grado red. Ive been replacing the stylus periodically.
Table is a Rega Planar 3. Same age.
Any ideas? What does a failing cart sound like?
Unfortunately, I dont have another cart to test.
