I too had a stiff, brittle mat. I chalked it up to being 40 years old. I have a friend with a vertical mill and he just milled the little flange off so I can use any mat I want. Also, your thrust pad is probably cracked and disintegrating so the spindle is riding on bare metal. Get the Delrin PL-41 thrust pad on ebay. Google "Let's Mod A Pioneer PL-41" and there is some great info. Mostly it's about tonearm spacing and mounting but there's good info about opening up the bearing, polishing the spindle, and replacing the thrust pad. I'm sorry I wasn't able to help with the brittle mat issue. Good luck. Have fun.
