Pioneer PL-41A platter mat softening?

Greetings,

I've recently purchased a Pioneer PL-41A turntable, and when I received it, the platter mat seemed hard. I used Vinylex on it, no change. Today, I happened to see a video on Youtube of a person using my model TT, and when he removed the platter mat, it was soft and pliable. There isn't anything a person can do to soften a platter mat, is there, or is there some secret recipe?
