I'm thinking of upgrading from my Hagerman Bugle to a tube stage. I had my eye on the Pro-ject Tube Box DS and also the Cornet 3(which I am finding scarce information about). I have several cartridges that I sometimes switch between so I need multiple gain options. The Cornet 3 would need a step-up and I see that Hagerman has an adjustable one for $289. After a brief search of step-up transformers, $289 appears to be peanuts as it looks like everything else starts around $400-ish and go upwards of $4,000? I feel like I'm missing something here. Doesn't your average adjustable MM/MC phono stage function as a step-up? I added sockets to my Bugle which allows me to swap 4 resistors to get all the different gains I need. Just really curious as to why a dedicated transformer costs crazy $$$.
