RE: Another DIY 3 phase variable frequency drive for Papst motor update.

Hi Twystd,

First off, congratulations on your success.

Even though this is not a DIY forum I'm sure there are a good many who find interest in this. Please do post schematics as well as BOMs. I seem to remember that you are using a polyphase DDS function generator. I lost track of which one it is. Please refresh me on that. I do play with my Papst motor from time to time.

My plan is to have a variable frequency polyphase drive. I'm looking for variable speed as well as quieter operation of the motor.

I will be very interested if you still get the apparent speed error with your new tach. That motor is synchronous so 60 Hz should yield 1800 RPM precisely. Either your old tach or your function generator was not telling the truth. Before I buy the function gen I want to know it is accurate.

I am happy to hear that you have reduced the noise. So far I have not achieved the powered noise level of the motor immediately after the power is removed. So far my experiments have been passive phase shift with mains power. I'm convinced so far that the issue is distortion on the mains power. The shifted phase looks pretty good however the mains power directly is ugly.

Phil
