John Elison does mention the possibility that it may be that your tracking force gauge is changing and not the setting. If you use a digital type, typically one of those Chinese ones made by Canrom which are sold under many audio brands, then these need calibrating fairly regularly. They come with a 5g test weight to enable this or you can go one better and use a laboratory test weight. It is also necessary to ensure that the measurements being compared are taken with the stylus at the same position on the device's measuring platform - that's why they print that little black target on it.
For all types of gauge including beam levels then the conditions of use may affect the reading taken at one time compared to another e.g. how level the gauge was for both readings.
If you have changed the arm height between readings (for example when altering VTA) then this too will change the VTF reading, most notably if you use a unipivot arm (though gimbal arms are affected too), as will whether you take one measurement with the gauge directly on the platter and the other with the gauge on top of a mat or record ( or both).
