It could be like the Walker Audio Motor Controller. First you set speed, either 33 or 45, and then using the strobe of your choice you fine tune the speed with either of those two big knobs. (Always wanted an excuse to write "two big knobs".) In other words, no feedback, not automated. The main advantages being tuning the speed and synthesizing the AC so as to eliminate noise from the wall socket. That also isolates the downstream equipment that might be plugged into the same house AC from noise generated by the turntable motor.
