Yup, single-sided signal loss caused by the needle should only be possible in case of designs like AT's typical dual/V magnet design. Whereas in case of regular Elac/Shure-like MMs and also typical MIs with one single magnet it's hardly imaginable, how a problem with the needle should be able to affect one channel only.
