RE: Have nostalgia for rotary phones, but NOT vinyl...

I have a 500 phone in the garage and some dial pulse phone ~ '40s vintage phone in the kitchen. If we lost power we still had phones as we had DSL for internet and regular old fashioned phone service. My youngest granddaughter would get a kick out of calling her Mommy on the old time phones.

We got talked into U-verse. We are ~ 1 mile from the fiber to copper conversion so we still do not get our video from it and the internet may be as good as DSL. The phone dial tone and ringtone are generated in the U-verse modem in our house. No power, no modem, so no phone. The modem does not recognise dial pulse so calls cannot be originated from the dial pulse phones. Also the modem generates a wimpy ring tone so the electromechanical ringers in the old phones sound awful.

We have ATT cell service which is dicey in our area and our house is wrapped in aluminum heat barrier. I think it is snake oil for its claimed benefit but it is a good Faraday shield for cell service so no cell phone in the house.

Isn't progress wonderful? Usually it is, but sometimes not so much.
