or Not

NOT. i didn't dump my vinyl for CDs because it i didn't make sense as the sound was already great and all the titles i had would have cost a fortune to replace.

time passed, a great sounding inexpensive cdp was selected (magnavox for $140 at target!) and my first cd was brothers in arms. FANtastic sound. a few months later i found the same music on LP in the dollar bin. took it home and WOW, even BETTER sound. ten less minutes of music on the LP but it was so skillfully edited that i couldn't tell where.

other early CDs i got were robert palmer's riptide, huey lewis sports, and stevie winwood's back in the high life among others. my two younger daughters became infected with those albums and to this day cannot sit still to them. those albums also sound better on vinyl and lets add peter gabriel's SO to the list here.

i have a strong love of changing cartridges and even though they all sound different from one another, they all sound RIGHT. that flies in the face of the preference of accuracy but it is true.

for the most part, LP playback yields a more organic and competent sound that compact disc closely followed by SACD and hi rez downloads. of course i try to avoid records with ticks and pops but when they are there in low density, the brain can easily stop hearing them just the same way it can mask out any background noise such as tape hiss.

yes you can hear those anomalies IF you focus on them but once focusing on the music, the artifacts are usually not noticed. vinylphobes nearly always focus on the artifacts and can't seem to stop that process and just have to listen to Cds. its a choice and then you are adhered to the benefits and drawbacks of RBCD.

its not to say you can't get glorious sound from cd if you optimize for it. it incurs more dollar outlay for equivalent quality than does vinyl playback. that is my view and i am sure there are other's views that differ widely from mine.
