RE: Never before has this happened

Sounds like a problem with the cartridge coil; I cannot imagine how a problem with the stylus per se could lose you one channel and not the other, except maybe if a magnet came unglued from the armature of the cantilever (????). The other place to look is at the input to your phono stage; possibly a zap of voltage across the grid to ground of the phono input tube could have burnt out the cartridge coil on that side. These are both in the category of WAGs.

AKG MM cartridges were/are known for losing output on one channel only. I cannot recall the mechanism for that, but you might look it up.
