Nostalgia can be one, and we should happily support that. If nostalgia gets a man reacquainted with the act of really focusing and listening more carefully, that man will come to appreciate the music even more because he gave it the attention it deserves. And what's wrong with that?
Many times I have Pro-Digittal clients who ask to hear a record on our relatively expensive rig just because they're fascinated with the way it looks and costs and they want to know if it can really compete as a format. Sometimes they're incredulous,if not contemptuous. After 30 minutes of listening to a combination of older and newer releases, they become converts and so begins the journey of acquiring a fledgling analog rig. Good times...
A moron for some home theater e-zine recently posited that it is hipsters who are making vinyl relevant again. Mike Fremer handed this upstart's ass to him on his own forum. It was beautiful to read Michaels responses in the way that it is always beautiful to read someone who speaks the truth, knows his subject matter and doesn't run or cower from the Perfect Sound Forever crowd. Michael stated that his observations have shown him that vinyl is purchased by a mixed crowd, as it always has been.
In record stores here in Southern New Jersey, there does seem to exist a sense of community among record buyers that one doesn't get in the CD aisles at the local Target store. And that's a huge advantage for the LP as a format.
Anyway, I say God bless and keep the vinyl LP !
