I wouldn't recommend my Jazz system to others: it's where I started in my teens, and it's the hardest because so many people play on each others' albums. I did mine by lead instrument and in rough chronology...so under trumpet Armstrong is before Gillespie is before Davis, etc. And then certain people (Mingus and Nelson and Sun Ra, for example), are in a separate section because I think of them as leaders as opposed to instrumentalists. Vocalists are separate by male and female and run older to newer. And Ellington has his own section/shrine in chron order along with anyone associated with him (Hodges, Strayhorn, etc) A lot of it seems to reflect how I associate things. Whacky, huh???? :)

Rock is alpha, but then I have all the Beatles under "Beatles," Clapton and Bruce are with "Cream," and Townshend with "Who." And I always forget whether I put Zeppelin under Z or L. Decisions, decisions....

Zappa has his own section, and I keep Beefheart and Tim Buckley there too because I associate them.

Blues and Funk has a separate section.

Opera is alpha under composer. Easy.

Classical I break into 3 sections, because each suits a mood: Orchestral (symphonies, etc.); Concertos; and then quartets and sonatas. Each is alpha by composer within.

Chant and liturgical music has a separate section. (how did I end up with so many different Messiahs????)

I think some of this was determined by my shelves and what made sense at a time when I had fewer records and smaller shelves.
