My organization (roughly 3K LPs) is similar to your thoughts. Within classical they are by composer, then type - solo instrument, concerto, symphony, etc. I'm not greatly knowledgable about classical so this makes it easiest to find what I want to hear. One friend with a much larger collection arranges by label, then serial number. That would take me forever to find anything.
