In an attempt to buy a cheap phono stage for my SL-1200, I ended up with four cheap phono stages. One of them sounds expensive and the other three sound cheap, so I use the one that sounds expensive.
First, I bought an Audio Technica AT-PEQ3, which was on sale for $46. That didn't cut it.
Next, I bought a Yaqin MS-22B on eBay for $199. It actually sounds very nice. It sounds at least like $500 if not more so this is the one I use with my SL-1200.
Recently, I thought I should be able to improve on the Yaqin and I bought two $400 phono stages. Neither even comes close to bettering the Yaqin. One is a Bellari VP530 and the other is a Parks Audio Budgie. It was a complete waste of $800.
Personally, I think the particular Yaqin MS-22B I bought sounds like a fairly expensive phono stage. I don't know if I got lucky or whether all Yaqin's sound as good as mine. However, it wouldn't surprise me if I had to spend $1000 to find a better sounding phono stage than my Yaqin MS-22B.
