I suggest he stick with the Planar 3 unless the Pink Triangle can be equally fuss-less. Does it even have a dust cover, for instance?

I have modified my Planar 3 in the motor compartment. New white belt and I added some damping to the motor assembly. The buzzing motor has been my only gripe about a Planar 3 and I appear to have eliminated 80% of it, without buying the new DC motor.
