As I was there playing a minor role...
It was done over the course of a couple of days' worth of takes. After each one, Shaw would go downstairs where the Soundstream recorder was set up and reviewed the performance. Since the A/C was shut down, he'd be carrying a small towel with him!
I remember him giving the clarinet player direction as to exactly how he wanted that short solo in the PD to go. The guy got it on the second try IIRC.
Dr. Stockham was there to supervise use of the newfangled digital recorder.
Trivia bit: that was one of the first uses of the Dr. John W. Cooledge Memorial Bass Drum. After hearing the Cleveland Holst piece, he knew the one the ASO had at the time was not up to the task. He was involved in getting Telarc to Atlanta.
