I've used the ME for a couple of years with no problems I'm aware of.
1. I cut a cube from the original sheet.
2. Place the cube next to the platter (stationary), not on it.
3. Position stylus directly over the ME.
4. Use arm lift to lower and raise stylus directly into the ME, repeat 4-6 times.
5. Brush off stylus/cantilever to be sure no fibers remain.
I don't do this for every record, but maybe for every other listening session. That is unless it is an extended session of half dozen sides or more. Yesterday when I did this procedure I noticed a small black dot on the ME where the stylus made contact. I've seen that before and assume it is "junk" cleaned from the stylus. When I see that I then move the ME slightly to a clean area before further contact.
Now however reading Dave Pogue's reply makes me wonder, should I follow up the ME with a liquid cleaner to remove disrupted "junk" before heat bakes it on? Maybe not every ME application but at least say once a week?
