I just acquired a Technics SL-1300 automatic turntable from a thrift shop. The speed selector switch was ineffective due to a broken plastic sleeve that was non-repairable so I cable tied the switch so that it plays only 33 1/3 rpm—I don't play 45's, so no major loss. It came with a MA 2002e cartridge and stylus. I was going to ditch the cartridge but after I read glowing reports on its performance I decided to give the stylus a good cleaning, very gingerly, with a tiny strip of Magic Eraser and a dab of alcohol. It cleaned up pretty well and looked good with a 30 power magnifier. I know it's old and probably has a lot of hours on it but I would like to retain it for a while as the same stylus sells for almost $300 on flea-bay.
My question is, how can you really tell when the stylus needs replacing without a special microscope? Do test records help in any way? So far I am playing LP's that I care little about and I can't detect any problems with playback. I am also on a limited budget so if I can retain it I will be pleased.
