One more thing to add... The more exotic cuts have a longer useful life before 3rd harmonic distortion components increase to an audible level- Largely due to the reduced contact pressure in the groove due to the large bearing radius. The time to final failure with these tips can extend easily beyond 1000 hours partly because higher quality (jewellery grade) diamond is used and the better ones are selected for grain orientation. However, the more extreme cuts tend to fail catastrophically when they get close to the end of the useful life. A microline may have chips knocked off the ridge and then the vinyl gets ripped up!
The Simple Elliptical cut (front and back face cut from a basic spherical tip) has the shortest life and gives the greatest record wear. The worst offenders for wear would be the 0.2x0.7mil variety.
