This is a really interesting article on the recording techniques of Decca and EMI in the 50s and 60s. Though Decca is largely regarded to have better sound, EMI also put out some wonderful classical recordings in those days. So much of the early recording was guess work, seeing what worked and what didn't, often experimenting with different mike set ups. Yet it's amazing how many great recordings they produced in those years largely due to talented engineers with good ears that were willing to take chances.
